A Look Back

Little Falls Granite Works was founded in March 1911 when G.W. Karlson visited Little Falls from Minneapolis with the intention of opening a granite carving “monument works.” Karlson built the company’s original location on Wood Street SE, which eventually became Trettel Produce. In 1916, Karlson moved operations to 24 East Broadway.

In addition to experiencing several moves in its existence, Little Falls Granite Works has also seen many different owners. While Karlson formed the business in 1911, he did not remain the sole proprietor for long. Sometime in the early 20s, Aaron A. Nelson, previously of Little Falls Black Granite Co., took on total ownership of the business. In 1949, his son Spencer took over as sole owner. Ray Calhoun, Ron Nagel, and Howard Garry purchased the company from Spencer Nelson in 1963. Ron Nagel became the sole owner in 1986. Twenty years later, Ron was joined by his sons Scott and Todd, as well as Ray Calhoun’s son Don.

Today, Little Falls Granite Works is owned by Scott Nagel, Todd Nagel, and Don Calhoun. Little Falls Granite Works has grown enormously since its humble beginnings, now serving the Upper Midwest with a diverse, highly-skilled team of talented designers and master stonemasons dedicated to compassionate storytelling in stone. Whether you choose a permanent cemetery memorial or a granite keepsake for the home or garden, you’ll find that empathy and personal care are the cornerstones of our approach. We are honored to create memorials that tell the unique story of your loved one’s life to be cherished for generations to come.
