A Look Back

In the early 1930s, Swedish immigrant David Herman Soderstrom surveyed the 40-acre Mt. Iron Granite Quarry. A stonecutter by trade, Soderstrom had a vision for this massive hill of rich, dense pink granite. He began his quarrying operation, cutting and shipping granite to Melrose Granite Co. in St. Cloud to become cemetery memorials. Soderstrom later founded Hibbing Monument Company, and in 1940, hired recent high school graduate Ruth Kapilovich. For 64 years, Ruth ran Hibbing Monument Co. as if she owned it, a reflection of her strong will and independent character. Over the years, Ruth witnessed several ownership changes within the company, including its eventual sale to Little Falls Granite Works.

Today, Ruth’s legacy of strong female leadership continues in owners Cay Hanley and Mary Doherty, a mother-daughter team. While granite-carving technology has changed tremendously over the years, one thing has stayed the same: Hibbing Monument’s passion for being genuinely caring and compassionate to the families we serve.
